A Palatka resident has filed his intent to run for office in the hopes of unseating a two-term member of the Putnam County School Board.

Leon Edenfield filed his candidacy paperwork May 29 to compete in the contest for the nonpartisan District 2 board seat, according to the Supervisor of Elections Office.

He will be facing off against David Buckles, who was first elected to the board in 2016 and won his reelection bid in 2020.

While this is Edenfield’s first time seeking a Putnam County School Board seat, he ran for the District 2 Board of County Commissioners office in 2018. He lost in the primary to Jeff Rawls.

If Edenfield and Buckles are the only candidates in the District 2 school board race by the time qualifying ends at noon June 14, the winner will be decided in the Aug. 20 primary.

If there are more than two candidates, the primary hopeful who receives 50% of the vote plus at least one additional vote will win the school board seat. If no candidate wins that many votes, the two with the most votes will compete in the Nov. 5 election.

Because school board seats are nonpartisan, all voters can vote in the school board races during the primary.
